The World’s Finest Painting

10 August 2009 3 Comments

meninasTook an abbreviated tour of Museo del Prado. Among its astounding collection of paintings is this one by Velazquez reputed by our guide book, and many others, to be the world’s greatest painting. Called Las Meninas, it shows Velazquez himself painting the Royal Couple, while the Royal Daughter and her servants, some clerics and a dog, look on. I don’t really think it is the world’s greatest painting, or even if that appellation can be given to any single work of art, but it is neat. The King and Queen are standing exactly as we, the onlookers stand, and we see the real subjects of the work from their perspective. Quite a mind bender.

Very fun blog! World’s greatest painting – hmm. I’ll propose a Top Ten (easier than a Top 100). I’d include Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Picasso, a breakthrough piece bridging the past and future of art history.

Oh, I’d top my list with La Primavera, by Botticelli and Leonardo’s Annunciation.
